Attachment

The Attachment data type allows you to attach images, documents, and other files within cells.

Attached files are displayed as clickable thumbnails and can be previewed or downloaded by workbook users.

With Spreadsheet.com, your Attachments can live in cells. Drag and drop documents and images into cells or import from Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, Dropbox, or other links. You can use Attachment data types to store applicant resumes in a workbook of candidates, possible menus for your new restaurant, or creative storyboards for a new commercial your team is developing.

Configuration Options

Strict

Like other data types, Attachment data types can be have Strict enabled. Selecting the Strict checkbox for Attachment cells will restrict users to only attaching files (as opposed to text, users, numbers, etc.) Also, columns that have Strict enabled cannot have cells of different data types.

Allow Multiple Attachments & Thumbnail Size

You can choose to limit each cell to one attachment or many.

Adjusting the thumbnail size changes your row heights and the height and width of attachment thumbnails in the row. Changing row height is especially useful for large image files, as Large or Extra large thumbnail sizes can be more easily viewed without expanding the cell.

How to Add an Attachment to a Cell

Attachments can be dragged and dropped from your device or copied and pasted from your clipboard into an Attachment cell. Or, you can open the Add attachment dialog by clicking on the paperclip icon in an Attachment cell.

From the Add attachment dialog, you can import files from your device or from other file hosting services like Google Drive and Dropbox.

Workbook users with Editor, Collaborator, Manager, or Owner permissions can add attachments. Individual attachments are limited to a maximum file size of 20 MB, and cells can contain an unlimited number of attachments. Your workbooks may be subject to a maximum total number of attachments based on your Spreadsheet.com plan.

Supported File Types

Spreadsheet.com supports various file types in Attachment cells, each with their own behavior when expanded.

  • Spreadsheets (xls, xlsx, ods, ots) are rendered as a workbook with clickable worksheet tabs.
  • Documents (doc, docx, odt, ott, pdf) are rendered in a document viewer with search and various view options.
  • Presentations (ppt, pptx, odp, otp, odg) are rendered in a presentation view with animations intact.
  • Graphics (bmp, gif, jpg, jpeg, png, svg) are shown in a higher resolution than the thumbnails (though not as high as the original file).
