What is a Gantt Chart?

A Gantt chart is a graphical representation of a timeline. Individual tasks are represented as taskbars laid out on a horizontal axis, with the length of each taskbar proportional to the length of a task. Compared to tasks listed as spreadsheet rows, Gantt charts help project managers better envision a project’s timeline.

By turning a task list into a Gantt chart, a list like this…

…becomes a timeline like this:

Gantt Views place one of these timelines side-by-side with your project task list.

Exploring Gantt View and Project Management Features

Gantt Views and Project Management settings are packed with features to help you manage projects in Spreadsheet.com like a PM professional.

Dependencies and Constraints

Dependencies and constraints determine how multiple tasks within a project are scheduled and sequenced, in conjunction with task start and end dates. Dependencies describe relationships between tasks that must be started or completed in a specific order. Constraints are used to minimize the time between successive tasks or schedule tasks in such a way so as to not delay the project.

Spreadsheet.com supports four types of dependencies and eight types of constraints.

Task Hierarchies and Parent Cell Rollup

Task hierarchies can help you make distinctions between tasks and subtasks, or organize tasks into larger scopes of work. When you organize tasks into hierarchies with Project Management enabled, some fields in parent rows – like Start Date, End Date, and % Complete – automatically rollup information from their child rows.

Learn more about working with task hierarchies when Project Management is enabled.

Critical Path

A project’s critical path is the series of tasks that determines the duration of the project as a whole. Delays to activities on the critical path delay the project as a whole. Spreadsheet.com automatically calculates your project’s critical path and can highlight it on your Gantt View. Learn more about the critical path.
